What is LVST BIG Therapy for People with Parkinson's?

Patients who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease have options for targeted therapies to help alleviate or slow some of the side effects related to speech and movement, and maintain a better quality of life.

One of the defining symptoms of Parkinson’s disease is stiffness or slowing of movement, that cause all the movement output ending up being small. There is no known cure for the progressive disease; however, the targeted and intense therapies included in the LSVT BIG program can help patients combat difficulties and deterioration in mobility and speech.

The LSVT BIG program has been documented to be an effective treatment to negate symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. With this therapy, a physical therapist utilizes treatment techniques that focuses on high intensity, full-body, functional movement, to mitigate symptoms.

Recent studies have shown that forced exercise (intense exercise) is as effective as easing Parkinson’s symptoms as Levodopa. The study also shows that the benefit of exercise to people with Parkinson’s disease is from at least 3 times a week.

About the duration of exercise, a recent study shows some benefits of exercise affecting people with Parkinson’s disease as little as 10 minutes. However, the ideal duration that the research shows as beneficial is at least 30 minutes. You can start with your comfortable duration, and try to add minutes each time until you get at least 30 minutes of exercise.
